Q&A: Independence

Q: I want my dad to remain as independent as possible, but he’s starting to show signs of confusion and his reactions seem slower. How do I know when it’s time to take the car keys?

A: As hard as it is to watch your parent grow older, knowing when to intervene can be even more difficult. If you haven’t yet discussed how you’ll manage your loved one’s changing health, it’s important to find the time to come up with a plan while they are still able to be part of the decision-making process—and are less likely to be defensive about their increasing limitations.

If someone’s safety is at stake, don’t hesitate. Involve your loved one’s physician and other family members in the discussion, and make arrangements for transportation after you’ve taken the car keys.
