Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the whites of the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes caused by deposits of bile salts in these tissues. It occurs as a symptom of various diseases, such as hepatitis, which affect the processing of bile (a fluid that aids with digestion). Jaundice is also common in newborns because the liver may not be fully up to the task of processing bile right after birth.
